Complete October 1940 number (Vol. 230, No. 4) of the Journal of the Franklin Institute, published by the Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania, containing Malina’s paper on pp. 433–454. The author is identified as Frank J. Malina, Ph.D., of the California Institute of Technology. The contents also list Brigadier-General Earl McFarland’s “Trend in Weapon Types and Design” (p. 413), whose last page precedes Malina’s paper.
The introduction cites A. Ananoff’s recent descriptive survey of reaction propulsion and the earlier theoretical work of Goddard, Esnault-Pelterie, Oberth, Sänger, Rynin, Buckingham, Africano and Vogelpohl, then states that the study is confined to the theory of perfect gases, with the general formulae evaluated for liquid oxygen and gasoline. A universal thrust diagram is developed from dimensionless formulae, and numerous charts and curves follow. The paper is the theoretical groundwork of the Caltech rocket group’s later practical tests. Also issued as JPL Report R-6 (October 1940), it appears to be Malina’s first paper under his own name alone; his earlier published work was co-authored, for example with H. S. Tsien on sounding-rocket flight analysis (1938).
