Quaderno di cultura no. 11, issued by the Air Force General Staff’s Studies Office in June 1949 in 500 copies. Written for flying personnel in plain terms, with the mathematics reduced to a minimum.
The first chapter surveys reaction engines, with rocket propulsion given only a short section beside the ramjet, turbojet and turboprop. Further chapters treat thrust, power and propulsive efficiency; turbojet components (compressor, turbine, combustion chambers) and their drawbacks; and a long final chapter on piloting jet aircraft, covering Mach and compressibility effects, takeoff and landing, high-altitude flight, navigation and formation flying. Illustrated with diagrams and graphs, and closing plates of British and American turboprops and turbojets.
