A posthumous collection of Tsander’s rocket writings from 1924–1932, edited by M. K. Tikhonravov, who supplies a 17-page editor’s foreword. It sketches Tsander’s life (born Riga 1887, died Kislovodsk 1933), his early interplanetary calculations, his rocket-aeroplane projects, and his work in GIRD, where his OR-1 gasoline/air engine (1930–31, up to 5 kg thrust) and the liquid-oxygen OR-2, tested on 23 December 1932, are illustrated with photographs and a plant diagram.
The core is the long essay The Problem of Flight with the Aid of Jet Apparatus (1932): atmosphere, jet-engine types and efficiencies, fuels, and rocket aeroplanes. Further papers cover supersonic aviation, thermal design of a liquid-fuel engine, and Tsander’s signature idea of burning the rocket’s own metal structure as fuel, plus two articles on flights to other planets.
Issued the same year and by the same press as Tikhonravov’s Works on Rocket Technology of Tsiolkovsky (also in this collection); Tsander also appears in the 1936 Russian Flight Into Universal Space (Valier), and his autobiography was first printed in Rynin’s Interplanetary Communication, issue 4 (Leningrad, 1929).
