A short essay of about 60 pages by Maj. Gen. Georgy Pokrovsky, an engineer-general and Doctor of Technical Sciences, issued by the Ministry of Defense’s Military Publishing House. It has three chapters, on the role of the different branches of knowledge in military affairs, the role of military technology in modern wars, and “military-technical culture.”
Opening with Engels on the dependence of arms on production, it argues that atomic weapons, long-range rockets, guided missiles, supersonic aircraft and radar have changed warfare so much that the experience of 1941–45 and Korea is only a historical landmark. It is a political-military tract rather than a technical survey, and the rocket material is brief. An errata slip is tipped in.
