Grew out of a space-medicine symposium held at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, on March 3, 1950. Contains Wernher von Braun’s first article in English, “Multi-Stage Rockets and Artificial Satellites,” which lays out a three-stage ferry ship, a rotating wheel-shaped space station, and a lunar-flyby trajectory departing from and returning to that station. Also includes Harry Armstrong’s account of founding the USAF Department of Space Medicine and Heinz Haber’s essay linking astrophysics (solar radiation, flares, the corona) to the hazards of space flight.
Armstrong recruited Haber during Project Paperclip. Another book by Haber (1953) is also available in the collection.
