Whitestone Book No. 23, copyright 1958 by Whitestone Publications, Louisville, with editorial offices at 67 West 44th Street, New York. The editor was Adolphe Barreaux, with Larry Eisinger as editor-in-chief, and a note states that the cover and all the drawings are by the author. Barreaux’s foreword presents Tinsley as a long-time aviation and science reporter and painter of aircraft and space subjects, a founder of the Aviation Writers Association and a member of the British Interplanetary Society and of U.S. space-study groups, who also drew the wartime comic strip “Captain Yank.”
The text opens with “Mysterious Lights in the Sky,” “The History of Rockets,” “Modern Rockets” and “Men and Materials,” and then climbs in six “steps”: The First Million Years, The Manned Satellite, Stations in Space, Man on the Moon, Interplanetary Voyagers and Onward to the Stars. The pages are interleaved with advertisements for telescopes, which reflect the amateur-astronomy audience of the post-Sputnik years.
