Russian translation of Theory of Combustion Instability in Liquid Propellant Rocket Motors, published in 1956 by Butterworths for the Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development (AGARD) of NATO, as the title page, which reproduces the English original’s imprint, records. The Russian edition was translated by T. F. Altukhova and M. O. Lerner and edited by Prof. Yu. Kh. Shaulov, approved for press 17 November 1958 and printed at the University Press in Budapest.

The publisher’s annotation describes the authors as creators of the mathematical theory of unstable combustion, who analyze oscillations in the liquid rocket engine as a dynamic system using methods of automatic control theory, and says published experimental data are compared with theory for the first time. A lengthy editorial introduction precedes the text. Chapter I covers combustion processes, time and space lag, nonlinear effects, and the mechanisms of low-frequency (“chugging”) and high-frequency (“screaming”) instability. Chapter II analyzes low-frequency instability, with sections on the feed system, constant-flow and constant-pressure feeds, servostabilization and two-component systems, followed by high-frequency analysis, appendices and a bibliography citing Tsien, Crocco, Cheng and Elias and Gordon, among others.
