Translated by James Cleugh and Geoffrey Halliday from the German V2 — Der Schuss ins Weltall (Bechtle Verlag, Esslingen, 1952), with an introduction by Willy Ley. The title page identifies Dornberger as Major General, formerly Commanding Officer of the Peenemünde Rocket Research Institute. First published in the United States in June 1954 and on the same day in Canada by Macmillan.
After Ley’s introduction, Dornberger’s foreword and a table of the characteristics of the A-4 (V-2), the chapters open with the launch of 3 October 1942 (“Rocket Away!”) and go back to the Treaty of Versailles and the Army Weapons Department, the Kummersdorf West experimental station, the Greifswalder Oie, “Hitler and the Rocket,” “A Man Called Degenkolb,” the choice between V-1 and V-2, “Peenemünde at Work,” and the chapters “Black Day” and “Flaming Night,” with illustrated plates of the rocket and its test stands. Ducrocq’s earlier French account, Les Armes Secrètes Allemandes, is in Catalog C.
