The debut issue of Conquest, relaunching the Society’s members-only newsletter — represented in this collection by News-Letter Number One, July 1956, catalogued just above — as a public, newsstand magazine (price 2/6, on sale in bookshops) in the run-up to the International Geophysical Year.
Edited by M. Rogers, M.A. (Oxon.), with an editorial board of Dr. A. E. H. Bleksley, Dr. I. Venter, Dr. C. B. Jeppe, Prof. G. R. Bozzoli, and K. Howell, and H. Th. van den Ham as the Society’s Technical Director.
Content ranges well beyond rocketry: a lecture on the solar system by Dr. Venter, van den Ham’s own piece on the coming satellite launches, a report on Britain’s Harwell atomic research establishment, items on the Soviet H-bomb and South Africa’s own isotope production, a UFO research group, and features on modern computers, industrial noise, and current aircraft and submarine designs.
Also included is a Special General Meeting notice from the Society dated September 6, 1957, amending its regulations (adding a President and Vice Presidents and setting life-membership fees), issued days before this issue appeared.
A February 1958 notice from the Society announces that “due to circumstances outside the control of the Society,” Conquest was suspended “for the time being”; a November 1958 Society newsletter confirms it “has ceased publication” and describes plans for a differently named successor magazine, the Council having decided “Conquest” was “not suitable” as a title. No further issues are known: this appears to be the only number published.
