Two hand-signed letters and a contemporary newspaper clipping documenting Robert L. Farnsworth, founder and president of the United States Rocket Society, Inc. (Glen Ellyn, Illinois).
A two-page Notice of Annual Meeting, dated January 12, 1945 (the second page mistyped “1944”), postpones the Society’s convention because most members are serving in the war, proposes forming a stock-financed “Rocket Associates, Inc.” testing subsidiary, and muses that whichever nation holds the Moon will hold the fate of the Earth — closing with a plug for the forthcoming revised edition of “Rockets: New Trail to Empire,” the Farnsworth booklet also held in this collection (Catalog B). Accompanying it is a Chicago Daily News clipping from January 4, 1945, “He’d Fly to Moon — If Wife Would Let Him,” profiling the 35-year-old Farnsworth and his 4,000-member Society.
A later letter, dated May 4, 1948, on Society letterhead, solicits a member’s resume for a possible government civilian rocket program. Both letters are signed by Farnsworth in green ink.
