First edition, Harper & Brothers, New York, 1959; published in Germany the same year by Econ-Verlag, Düsseldorf, as Das Mondauto.
Rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth’s detailed engineering plan for a pressurized, jumping lunar surface vehicle, published a decade before the Lunar Roving Vehicle flew on Apollo 15–17. With a foreword by Heinz Gartmann tracing Oberth’s career from his 1923 A Rocket into Interplanetary Space through Peenemünde and his 1955–1958 stint at Huntsville with his former pupil Wernher von Braun.
Oberth first sketched the idea in Chapter 7 of his 1954 German original, Menschen im Weltraum (also in this collection), and here works it out in full across three sections—principal considerations, construction and operation, and testing and development—illustrated with a frontispiece and 21 diagrams.
