Color photograph of Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard on the lunar surface, taken by lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell through the window of the Lunar Module Antares during the first moonwalk at Fra Mauro on February 5, 1971. Shepard raises a gloved hand to shade his visor from the Sun; the red stripes on his helmet and suit mark him as commander, and the lander’s shadow falls across the left of the frame. The image appears to be NASA frame AS14-66-9230.
Mounted in a black mat with a signature panel below the photograph, signed “Alan Shepard” in gold ink.
Shepard flew America’s first crewed spaceflight, Freedom 7, ten years earlier on May 5, 1961, and is the only one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts to have walked on the Moon. Also in the collection: the Apollo 14 EVA photograph signed by Edgar Mitchell, who took this picture.
