“2nd Extra” rush edition, published the same afternoon as John Glenn’s February 20 1962 Friendship 7 flight, headlined “Glenn Makes Two Earth Orbits; Has Minor Trouble With Controls.”
Printed mid-mission (Glenn went on to complete a third orbit), it reports the automatic control system fault that put part of the flight on manual control, the cabin temperature climbing to 108°F, and Glenn’s sighting of “thousands of little luminous particles” streaming past the capsule (the “fireflies” observation later traced to ice shed from the spacecraft’s exterior). Houston’s Manned Spacecraft Center served as mission control for the flight.
