Scherschevsky, one of Oberth’s associates in Berlin, is thanked in Oberth’s Wege zur Raumschiffahrt (also in this collection) for proofreading that manuscript.
Opening with the motto “Per scientiam ad astra!”, the book surveys the rocket problem from ancient legend through contemporary experiment, then compares the competing spacecraft designs of Tsiolkovsky, Walter Hohmann, and Oberth himself — Hohmann’s tower-mounted design is dismissed as impractical, while Oberth’s staged alcohol/hydrogen ship is described in technical detail. It also documents the 1928–29 rocket-glider tests of the Rhön-Rossitten-Gesellschaft (designs by Alexander Lippisch, flown by Friedrich Stamer) and presents Scherschevsky’s own grid-cone parachute design. Its bibliography cites Oberth’s Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen in the same third (1928) edition Oberth reworked into Wege zur Raumschiffahrt, elsewhere in the collection.
