The Russian translation, by I. Bekker, of Gail’s moon-voyage novel Hans Hardt’s Mondfahrt (1928), made from the seventh German printing. Ya. I. Perelman supplies the preface and scientific editing; he sets the book beside Verne and Wells, argues that Gail’s ship is technically realistic rather than utopian, notes that the novel had reached seven printings and six foreign translations, and sketches Gail (born 1896, an artillery officer in the war, then a student of mathematics and electrical engineering).
Thirty-two short chapters, from “Twelve Hours Seven Minutes” to a closing “Conclusion,” follow the preparations, launch, weightlessness, lunar landing and return, with illustrations including a lunar landscape.
The German original and the U.S. By Rocket to the Moon are also in this catalog, as is Gail’s popular-science Mit Raketenkraft ins Weltall; Perelman’s own Mezhplanetnye puteshestviya (GIZ, 1929) is cited in the preface.
