An elementary outline of the gas turbine and the “thermal jet” system of aircraft propulsion, explained by everyday analogies and simple mathematics. The back cover lists its topics, including centrifugal and axial compressors and the Nene and Derwent engines. On pages 10–12 Clunan separates jet propulsion from rocket propulsion: a rocket carries its own propellants and works best in a vacuum, which he says makes interstellar travel by rocket feasible.
