A. R. Weyl’s survey of guided missiles, first published by Temple Press in 1949. The Foreword is by A. V. Cleaver, Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society, dated July 13, 1949: he compares the history of guided missiles to a history of aviation written in 1920, stresses their defensive and research uses, and foresees satellite space stations and eventually interplanetary vehicles growing out of the early rocket projectiles.
Six chapters cover the principles and constituents of guided missiles; their origins (British, French and American efforts); the development of operational robot aircraft, including the story of the V-1; operational long-range rockets, including the V-2 and the BMW liquid-propellant engines; the smaller types, among them Russian rocket technique, German guided bombs, flak rockets and air-to-air robots; and the present and future, from defence economy to peaceful applications. Appendices give design characteristics, code names for rocket propellants and a list of belligerent uses of guided missiles.
Temple Press also published Arthur C. Clarke’s Interplanetary Flight, held in Catalog D.
