Textbook based on a lecture course, “The Principles of Jet Propulsion,” that Zucrow gave in 1943–44 to graduate engineers from Los Angeles-area aircraft companies. Wartime security meant using only unclassified material, so the book keeps to basic principles.
Thirteen chapters run from the turbojet through compressors, turbines and combustion chambers to high-temperature metallurgy. Chapter 12, “The Rocket Motor,” about 65 pages, treats nozzle flow, thrust, specific impulse, cooling, propellants and rocket-assisted take-off of aircraft. Zucrow was then Professor of Gas Turbines and Jet Propulsion at Purdue. Compare Clunan’s elementary Gas Turbines and Jet Propulsion (also in this catalog).
