Sequel to Nicolson’s A World in the Moon (1935), which dealt with the Moon as an inhabited world. Here she follows the idea of flying there through the literature of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a project that grew from a 1937 sabbatical at the Huntington Library and the Maggs Brothers aeronautica collection it holds.
Six chapters, “The Discovery of a New World,” “Supernatural Voyages,” “Flight by the Help of Fowls,” “Wanton Wings,” “Flying Chariots” and “Variations on a Theme,” follow a prologue and precede an epilogue, a bibliography of some thirty pages and an index. Illustrated with plates of early flying-machine engravings. Dedicated to her Smith College students in “Science and Imagination,” 1936–1941.
