Catalog D · Prelude to Sputnik

Written and illustrated by Bendick for young readers, with Hal Goodwin, author of The Real Book of Space Travel (also in this catalog), thanked as space consultant and Hugh S. Rice of the Hayden Planetarium for reading the manuscript. It opens by telling children that many scientists expect people to be traveling in space within about twenty years, then moves from what and where space is, through how a rocket works and a space rocket’s design, to weightlessness, the space wardrobe, work in space, a space platform and station, the Moon, Venus and other destinations, and the return to Earth.

Illustrated throughout in stylized orange, green and black; the dust jacket flaps carry a “space wardrobe” illustration. This copy is the fourth printing of the 1953 first edition.
