Long-format version of the Collier’s symposium “Man Will Conquer Space Soon!” (22 March 1952), expanded with more text and illustrations by Bonestell, Rolf Klep and Fred Freeman. Chapters by Joseph Kaplan, Wernher von Braun (“Prelude to Space Travel,” the three-stage rocket and the wheel-shaped space station), Heinz Haber (“Can We Survive in Space?”), Willy Ley, Oscar Schachter on space law and Fred Whipple.
Von Braun and Haber were both brought from Germany by the U.S. government under Project Paperclip: von Braun in 1945 with the V-2 team, then at the Army’s Redstone Arsenal; Haber in 1946–47 (the jacket says 1947), working in the Air Force’s space medicine program before moving to UCLA. Haber’s own Man in Space (1953) is also in this catalog.
