The title page reads The Real Book About Space Travel by Hal Goodwin, illustrated by Clifford Geary and edited by Helen Hoke, Garden City Books, New York, “by arrangement with Franklin Watts, Inc.” The copyright page carries 1952 and 1956 dates, and the dust jacket reads “Book Club Edition.” A note says that the illustrations on pp. 91 and 140 were adapted from Space Medicine, edited by John P. Marbarger (University of Illinois Press), which is in this catalog.
An Introduction to Space and eighteen short chapters take a young reader from “The New Frontier” and “The Third Law” through escape velocity, the Moon and flight between planets to “Island in the Sky,” the other planets, “Thirty-two Worlds to Explore” and the stars. Line drawings of Goddard’s liquid-fuel rocket, the V-2 and the WAC Corporal illustrate the rocketry chapters, and the book ends with a reading list, “Reading for Rocketeers,” and an index.
