Two pieces of BIS membership correspondence addressed to Hayward E. Canney, Jr., of Locust Valley, New York — the same collector whose Swedish Interplanetary Society file also survives in this collection.
The first is a two-page typed letter dated April 5 1952, on the Society’s Friary Road, London S.E.15 letterhead, welcoming Canney as a newly admitted member (his enclosed membership certificate is mentioned but not present here) and describing the BIS as still “a relatively small band of pioneers,” asking him to help spread the case for spaceflight, contribute to the Journal and lectures, and consider introducing new members. It closes with an appeal for original ideas and article or correspondence submissions for the Publications Committee.
The second is a printed acknowledgement card, undated but on a later Bessborough Gardens, London S.W.1 letterhead, confirming receipt of Canney’s dues payment and apologizing that only one copy of “Spaceflight” — the Society’s new monthly magazine, launched in October 1956 — had yet reached him, offering to send the other two issues once he confirms which one he has; the wording implies the card dates to roughly December 1956, when the third monthly issue had just gone out. Both are signed by the same officer, Secretary L. J. Carter, A.C.I.S., not a Society president.
