The retained correspondence file of Hayward E. Canney, Jr., of Locust Valley, New York, who became an exchange member of the Swedish Interplanetary Society (SIS, Svenska Interplanetariska Sällskapet) beginning with his October 14 1955 application letter to secretary Karl-Hugo Betzfeldt.
The Society, affiliated with the International Astronautical Federation, mailed him its official business over the following years: a full 1955 annual report and financial statement, a complete draft of proposed new bylaws for the 1956 meeting, and circulars of its S.I.S. Litteraturtjänst literature-abstracting service, one addressed to him by name.
Also included is an illustrated technical bulletin from the Society’s Section II, dated March 29 1957, in which member Björn Karlström proposes a reusable aircraft carrier for air-launching a 100-ton space rocket, complete with a three-view drawing — amateur engineering work of the same kind the British Interplanetary Society is better known for. Rounding out the file are several hand-illustrated annual-meeting and “Rymd-Party” (Space Party) invitations from 1958–1959, drawn and signed by the Society’s clubmaster, Gudrun Philipson (“Philippa”), with rocket doodles and a pin-up sketch.
Together the papers document the working life — governance, technical ambition, and social calendar — of one of the smaller national societies that fed into the IAF alongside the German, South African, and Argentine bodies also represented in this collection.
