NASA SP-88, the report of a conference held July 19–31 1965 at Lawrence High School in Falmouth, Massachusetts, immediately following the National Academy of Sciences’ Space Science Summer Study at nearby Woods Hole. Convened under the Manned Space Science Coordinating Committee chaired by Richard J. Allenby, it gathered seven discipline working groups—geodesy/cartography, geology, geophysics, bioscience, geochemistry-petrology, particles and fields, and lunar atmospheres—plus a separate astronomy study group under Nancy Roman, to recommend a ten-year lunar science program spanning the early Apollo missions, the proposed Apollo Extension System, and a hypothetical post-AES lunar base. Working-group chairmen included geologist Eugene M. Shoemaker (U.S. Geological Survey) and MIT geophysicist Frank Press. The report states plainly that its recommendations reflect the working groups’ own opinions rather than official NASA policy.
