NASA SP-4005, a month-by-month chronology of the agency’s seventh year, prepared from open public sources and issued in 1965 by the Scientific and Technical Information Division. Robert C. Seamans, Jr., Associate Administrator, opens the volume citing Ranger VII’s more than 4,000 close-up lunar photographs, Mariner IV’s midcourse correction en route to Mars, Nimbus I’s day-and-night weather imaging, the seventh successful Saturn I test flight, and the completion of unmanned Gemini capsule testing as the year’s milestones building toward the Apollo landings. NASA Historian Eugene M. Emme’s preface notes this as the third volume in the series, following Aeronautics and Astronautics, 1915–1960 and Astronautics and Aeronautics, 1963 (SP-4004), credits Frank W. Anderson and Helen T. Wells with drafting the bulk of the text, and records that the Library of Congress Science and Technology Division took over the text’s preparation for the year’s final two months. Organized into monthly chapters from January through December, followed by appendices listing 1964 satellites, space probes, and manned flights; major NASA launchings; and abbreviations of references.
