An illustrated introduction to rocketry and space travel for young readers by Raymond F. Yates, a prolific popular-science writer (the jacket credits him with over seventy books, and past editorships at Popular Science Monthly and Popular Radio). Illustrated with the author’s drawings and with photographs, several lent by the American Rocket Society and its former president Cedric Giles; the acknowledgments also thank the late Dr. Robert H. Goddard for illustrations, V. D. Angerman of Science and Mechanics and the National Geographic Society.
The book is dedicated to the members of the American Rocket Society and to the memory of Goddard. Its ten chapters run from “Adventures High above the Earth” and “Escape through the Stratosphere” through “And So to the Moon,” “What Makes Rockets Rocket,” “Fuel, the Rocket’s Big Problem,” “What Buck Rogers Forgot,” “The ‘Big Push’ into Space” and “Adrift in the Sea of Space” to “The Story of the Squirt Plane” and “The Men behind the Rockets.” The jacket shows the author beside the cyclotron at the University of Rochester.
