The first American edition (copyright 1955; the English edition came from Chapman & Hall) of Eric Burgess’s survey of how rockets have extended knowledge of the Earth’s upper atmosphere. In his Foreword Sir Harold Spencer Jones, then Astronomer Royal, praises it as the first connected account of the various fields of rocket investigation; Burgess’s Preface is dated Manchester, February 1954, and cites papers from the August 1953 Oxford conference on rocket high-altitude research.
Eight chapters—Probing the Frontier, The Story Unfolds, Rockets Take Over, Laboratory in the Sky, The Ionosphere, Solar Radiation, Cosmic Rays and the Debris of Space, and Beyond the Exosphere—each end with reference lists, followed by a bibliography and index. The frontispiece is a chart of altitude regimes from the stratosphere to interplanetary space.
The Russian edition (1957) is also available in this collection, as is Burgess’s Guided Weapons in Russian.
