Guided Weapons.

Russian translation of Eric Burgess’s Guided Weapons (London: Chapman & Hall, 1957, as the title-page verso records), translated by N. A. Pavlov and edited by Yu. Kh. Vermishev, candidate of technical sciences. Approved for press 20 August 1958, and printed at the First Model Printing House in Moscow; the cover and binding were designed by A. I. Shcherbakov. The publisher’s annotation calls it a brief popular-scientific account of the problems of developing and using guided missiles, for readers interested in rocketry.

The editor’s eight-page preface to the Russian edition (pp. 5–12) frames the book as a technical survey by a leading research worker at an American guided-weapons research center in Los Angeles, recalls that Soviet readers already knew Burgess from Frontier to Space (1957), and disputes the author’s Cold War politics and some of his figures in footnotes, saying the book is issued for information only. Eight chapters cover guided missiles in the defense system, engines and fuels, guidance and control, testing and test equipment, surface-to-air, air-launched and surface-to-surface missiles (the last including V-2, Viking, Atlas and Hermes), and development and production.

The back matter has a literature list, an alphabetical index of the missiles and engines named in the text, and an index of firms; photographs and diagrams of launches and test stands are tipped through the text. Burgess’s Frontier to Space, in Russian, is also in this catalog.
