Written in 1934, documenting Kamanin’s fame from that year’s Chelyuskin ice-rescue expedition, which made him one of the first Heroes of the Soviet Union. Decades later he would chair the committee that selected Yuri Gagarin as the first man in space, but that role lay well in his future when this book was written.
Includes a fold-out map tracing his flight detachment’s route to Camp Schmidt. The volume also carries a second, shorter work by G. Kish, “Kamanin and Amakasu,” a fictionalized account pitting Kamanin against a Japanese officer, in the anti-Japanese, anti-fascist register typical of mid-1930s Soviet Far East writing.
His 1972 memoir, Pilots and Cosmonauts, is also in the collection (Catalog E), along with a 1959-printed envelope he signed and dated by hand in 1973.
