The title page states “second edition, revised and enlarged” of Sternfeld’s treatise on artificial satellites, published in Moscow the year after Sputnik, and credits him as laureate of the International Encouragement Prize in Astronautics. Eleven chapters of about 300 pages cover the laws of satellite motion, the satellite as seen from Earth, the launch rocket, launch trajectories, construction of large satellites, man in space, life aboard, observation and communication, return to Earth, satellites of the Moon, planets and comets, and the uses of satellites, with an appendix on the spread of astronautical ideas. Illustrated with tables, diagrams and photographs.
Inscribed in French on the title page by Sternfeld, “hommage cordial de l’auteur,” to Dr. L. R. Shepherd, Chairman of the Council of the British Interplanetary Society, and signed “Ary Sternfeld,” Moscow, April 1959. Sternfeld’s earlier Russian books on the subject are also in the collection.
