Published by Smithsonian Books, Washington, D.C., 2022, with a foreword by Gene Kranz, the Apollo 13 flight director.
Haise’s memoir traces his path from a Biloxi, Mississippi paperboy and Marine fighter pilot through NASA test-pilot and astronaut careers — backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 8 and Apollo 11, lunar module pilot on Apollo 13, and commander-designate of the cancelled Apollo 19 — and on to the space shuttle approach-and-landing test program and a later executive career at Grumman Aerospace.
Chapters include “My Ticket to the Moon,” “Odyssey — A Perfect Name,” and “A Sudden Detour” on the Apollo 13 crisis, and “Life on the Edge of Space,” recounting Grumman engineer Tom Kelly’s work qualifying the lunar module; the book closes with “In the Rocking Chair,” Haise’s reflections on STEM education and his board service with the Infinity Science Center.
