NASA overview booklet on the Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP), the Skylab payload built to test and validate remote sensing of the Earth’s natural resources from orbit.
The foreword explains that EREP’s five instruments permitted simultaneous sensing of ground test sites in the visible, infrared, and microwave spectral regions, with particular emphasis on validating spectral-signature identification from orbital altitude; results were to be correlated against data gathered by aircraft and on-site measurement, and considered alongside the automated Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS).
Following a December 1970 NASA announcement inviting qualified investigators to propose uses for the data, roughly 300 proposals arrived from domestic and foreign universities, industry, and local governments; by publication the resulting data-user program comprised about 164 individual tasks assigned to Principal Investigators in 32 states and 19 foreign countries, listed by number, investigator, and location in the pages that follow.
The cover device of a wheat stalk, conifers, and a fish over stylized water represents the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries applications under study.
