Press kit issued by Western Union International promoting its role in relaying the live color broadcast of the Apollo 11 splashdown, via a new compact mobile transmitter aboard the recovery ship USS Hornet.
An accompanying news release, headlined “TV Coverage of Apollo 11 Splashdown to Travel Over 300,000 Miles in Seconds,” explains the signal’s relay path from the recovery point (1,038 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii) out to more than 1,000 television stations worldwide, and why a signal that travels in a straight line needs so many relay hops to reach viewers beyond line of sight.
