Published by Smithsonian Books to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing and the exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (July 2009–January 2010).
Bean, the Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot and fourth man to walk on the Moon, resigned from NASA in 1981 to devote himself to painting his memories of the lunar surface; this coffee-table volume gathers 107 of his paintings, each paired with a quotation from a notable historical figure.
Essays by art critic Donald Kuspit, cultural geographer William L. Fox, and museum director Louis Zona place Bean’s work in art-historical context, and Apollo flight director Gene Kranz contributes a recollection from Mission Control.
