Tenth Anniversary softcover edition (St. Martin’s Griffin, New York, June 2009) of Cernan’s memoir, first published in hardcover in 1999; the original acknowledgments are dated Houston, September 1998.
Cernan flew in space three times — pilot of Gemini 9, lunar module pilot on Apollo 10, and commander of Apollo 17, on which he became the last person to walk on the Moon.
The book’s 31 chapters open with the January 1967 Apollo 1 fire in “Fire on the Pad” and “Taps,” before tracing Cernan’s own path into the astronaut corps and his difficult June 1966 Gemini 9 rendezvous and EVA in “The Angry Alligator” and “The Spacewalk from Hell,” through “Falling to the Moon” and “Down in the Valley” on the Apollo 10 and Apollo 17 missions, and closing with “The Search” on his life after Apollo. Cernan dedicates the book to his grandchildren and to those who worked to reach the Moon.
