Second Edition of Neil Armstrong’s hometown paper (Wapakoneta, Ohio), July 21 1969, headlined “Neil Steps on the Moon” over “Count Down: First men land on moon.”
Alongside wire coverage of the landing and Nixon’s “all people one” call to the crew, the front page carries a local human-interest story, “Mom, dad worries lighter after walk,” quoting Armstrong’s mother Viola by name on her fear the lunar surface “might be too soft” and that he “would sink in too deeply,” and his father’s remark that Nixon’s call was “real nice.” Also reports preparations for the Eagle’s liftoff from the Moon later that day.
